Students need to complete at least 25 points to earn an A. All projects are due by Monday, March 10. The grading scale will be as follows: A=25-21, B=20-16, C=15-11, D= 10-5. You may do more projects to ensure an A. Information may be gotten from the Kids Discover magazine on Cowboys, encyclopedias, or any cowboy books from the library.
Artistic Activities
____ Pretend that you have a large ranch in Texas and are in need of
some new cowboys. Create an advertisement , including a good one paragraph
job description to put in the local paper. Use page 3 in the Cowboy magazine
for helpful information. Be sure to include what abilities your cowboy
is expected to know and where to apply.. 5 pts.
____ Draw a picture of a cowboy or cowgirl. Label all of their clothing and accessories. Explain out to the side of each what the importance or use of each item is. Be sure to color. 5 pts.
____ Choose different types of cowboys from different areas of the country (page 4-5 Cowboy magazine). Draw a picture of each. Label the differences on your drawings and include your explanation for why they are different. 5 pts.
____ Honor a famous trailblazer or cowboy, real or fictional, by making a commemorative postage stamp. Draw the person on the stamp, design a stamp-like edge around it, color it and assign a value. Include a paragraph as to why this person should be honored.
____ Design a catalog for a company that sells cowboy or miner equipment. Inside the catalog draw, color, describe and price the equipment and supplies. Include a mail order form on the last page. 5-10 pts.
____ Design a set of three postcards showing sights travelers would have seen along the overland trails. Like real picture postcards, these should have a brief description of the location and scenery on the back. Be sure to color them. Draw in a stamp, add an address, (you can make it up), then include a message from a cowboy on the back of each card. 5 -10 pts.
Writing Activities
___ Four different kinds of horses were featured in the Cowboy magazine.
Choose one type and plan a report. Focus on how that type of horse is different
from other types, not just facts about horses in general. Drawings or pictures
will give you more points. You need at least a page to earn full credit.

____ Choose one famous cowboy or outlaw and do a one page report. Include where he is from, what (in)famous deed(s) he performed, and other important facts. A drawing or picture will give you extra points. You need at least a page to earn full credit. 5- 10 pts.
____ Write a poem exaggerating the feats of a cow puncher or telling the life of a cowboy on the open plains. Poems need not rhyme, but must be at least 6 lines each. 3 pts per poem.
____ Write a set of 5 dated journal entries based on your job as a cow puncher traveling from Austin, Texas to Abilene, Kansas. Include such entries as a stampede, the cook wagon, a river crossing or storm, and your arrival at a cow town. Each journal entry should be at least five good sentences. Drawings or sketches will give you added points. up to 10 pts.
____ Modern cowboys participate in bronc riding, barrel racing and calf roping. Read pages 12-13 in the Cowboy magazine for information and write up a one page report or newspaper article about popular rodeo events. Pictures or drawings will give you extra points. up to 10 pts.
____ There were many famous television and movie cowboys such as John Wayne and Clint Eastwood, as well as famous wild west stars such as Annie Oakley and Buffalo Bill Cody. Find information on one such famous person and write a one page report on them focusing mainly one their cowboy activities. Pictures or drawings will give you extra points. up to 10 pts.
