Reading
Challenge
Hall Library sponsors a Reading Challenge. In this
program, students read books and take computer tests using the Accelerated
Reader program. (Library books included in this program are marked
with yellow dots.) Points are awarded based on the level of difficulty
of the book and the number of questions the student answers correctly.
This year, students will be able to "spend" the points they earn for small incentives such as pencils, bookmarks, folders, and other goodies.
The students meet the Reading Challenge by earning 100 or more points and
receive a certificate on Awards Day. The top point-earner at each
grade level and the over-all school winner receive additional awards.

Young
Hoosier Book Award
The Young Hoosier Book Award (YHBA) is given each year by a branch
of the Indiana Library Federation
and its purpose is to stimulate recreational reading among elementary and
middle school students. Each year the YHBA committee selects 20 books
from suggestions submitted by students, teachers, parents, and librarians.
In April, students who have read 5 or more of the nominated books may vote
for their favorite. The author of the winning book is presented with
the award during the fall meeting of the Association of Indiana Media Educators.
At Hall, we have Accelerated Reader tests for each of the YHBA nominated books. If you read them, they will also count toward the Reading Challenge. Students who read all 20 books and score 80% or higher on the AR test will receive a special prize at the end of the school year. For a list of this year's YHBA books, past YHBA winners, or more information, visit the ILF website at http://www.ilfonline.org

| General Information | |
|
The library at Hall Elementary contains a variety of materials
including books, audio books, magazines, and videotapes. The library
materials are arranged in sections for Fiction, Nonfiction, Reference,
Biography, and Magazines. There is an area for teachers and staff
members which houses the videotape collection and professional materials.
The library has a small computer station with 5 machines for student use.
Our library uses an automated card catalog which can be accessed from 2
OPAC stations, from the technology lab, or from the classrooms, allowing
the students and staff to browse the library collection from any networked
computer in the building.
During the first week of school, classes visit the library for a welcome
and introductory session. The session includes how to use the library,
where things are found, and library rules.
Teachers may schedule times for class work on projects or have the librarian
visit the room with materials to enhance a unit of study. In addition,
the library staff hosts a variety of events to promote reading for enjoyment.
|
6th graders may check out three items at a time! Students may visit the library as needed during Open Library times.
Library Lines, a newsletter from the Hall Media Center, is published and sent home with students once each grading period. |
