After European nations explored and colonized other parts of the world, they wanted to control all aspects of life in these parts of the world. These powerful European nations wanted to control the economic, political, and cultural aspects of the areas they settled or captured.
They needed the natural resources of these areas for their factories. They needed the wealth of these areas for their military. If they controlled the cultural lives of the people they could keep the people from seeking independence.
European nations began to believe that in order to remain powerful they needed to rule more and more land. Eventually nations began to argue over land and resources. This led to the great wars of the Twentieth Century.
The diagram below may help show how Exploration, Imperialism, and the Industrial Revolution are connected in cause and effect relationships.
Information needed to complete the Map Section of your Research Project
- You will need to know the continent or continents where your animal lives and their location on that continent.
- You will need to know any special features of your animal's habitat. (desert, mountain, swamp, river, forest, plain, etc.)
- If your animal's habitat includes a specific area, you will need to know the name and location of those areas.( Himalaya Mountains, Amazon River, etc.)
- If you have an aquatic animal, you will need to know the specific water areas, (Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea, etc.) and if those water areas are near or part of a continent.
- If your animal migrates, you will need to know the migration route and be able to trace that route on a map.
- On Monday, April 17, you will be given maps and class time in History to work on the two maps needed for your Research Project.
- Your maps are to be given to Mr. Yount during History on Thursday, April 20. They will be graded for History and returned. Your maps must be included in your finished project when it is given to Mrs. Rogers on May 1.
Map Assignment for your Research Project
Outline and color the Habitat areas of your animal.
You are to Color and Label the Habitat of your animal on a Continent Map and on a World Map.
- If your animal follows an annual migration route, you are to draw that on the map.
- Label any specific areas like Himalaya Mountains, Sahara Desert, Etc.
- Label all the water areas and major rivers on the maps.
To make certain your maps are easy to understand, include a key in the box provided on each map. Create symbols for any special features you include on your map and include those in your key also.
Your maps are to be given to Mr. Yount during History class on Thursday, April 20
The information used to create your maps should be included in your written report.
Your maps are to be a part of your finished project on May 1.
